TPO vs Butynol: Choosing a Flat Roof Membrane in New Zealand

TPO and Butynol are two of the most common flat roof membranes used in New Zealand. They are not the same thing. Here is how they differ and how to think about which one suits your roof.

Two good membranes, built differently

Both TPO and Butynol are used to waterproof flat and low-slope roofs across New Zealand, and both can give you a long-lasting roof. But they are different materials joined in different ways, and that changes where each one shines.

TPO membrane

TPO is a thermoplastic single-ply membrane. Its defining feature is that the sheets are hot-air welded together — heat fuses them into one continuous piece.

  • Seams are welded, not glued, which makes them very strong.
  • The surface is usually white, so it reflects heat.
  • It suits large commercial roofs and modern builds where a clean, continuous welded surface is ideal.

Butynol membrane

Butynol is a synthetic rubber membrane with a long track record in New Zealand. It is a proven, hard-wearing material that has waterproofed Kiwi flat roofs and decks for decades.

  • It is flexible and tough, and copes well with awkward shapes and smaller roofs.
  • It is a familiar, trusted choice for decks, smaller flat roofs and re-roofing.
  • Joints are bonded rather than heat-welded.

How to think about choosing

TPO Butynol
Material Thermoplastic single-ply Synthetic rubber
Seams Hot-air welded Bonded
Surface Usually reflective white Typically dark
Often used on Larger commercial roofs, new builds Decks, smaller flat roofs, re-roofs

There is no single “best” membrane — the right answer depends on the roof. The size, the shape, the existing substrate, the amount of foot traffic and the look you want all feed into it.
